The field of Nursing – first-cycle studies

The number of hours of theoretical and practical classes is 4 720, and the number of ECTS credits necessary to complete the first-cycle studies is 180. Nursing is a field of study within a scientific discipline of health sciences.

First-cycle studies last 3 years, which is a total of 6 semesters.

Students of Nursing at the Medical University of Warsaw are offered education in the largest and most modern teaching hospitals in Warsaw, such as the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Warsaw in hospitals: Central Teching Hospital, Children’s Teching Hospital and Infant Jesus Teching Hospital. The practical classes are held at specialist health care units, such as the National Oncology Institute or Children’s Memorial Health Institute.

As a part of practical lessons indicated in the standards of education in the field of Nursing, the University conducts at least 5% of class time in a safe simulated environment at the Medical Simulation Center.  Noth synchronous and asynchronous e-learning is used in the teaching process. The University promotes this method of education, as well as tutoring, peer-tutoring and mentoring, for the most talented students.

Learning objectives

Contemporary nursing provides high standard care to the individual patients, family and social groups.

The fundamental goal of education is to provide students with current and modern medical knowledge and practical skills allowing them to conduct high-level nursing services, while ensuring their own and patients’ safety. An important goal is also shaping an impeccable ethical and moral attitude, as well as the ability to manage their own and the entire team's work.

The objectives of nursing education are as follows:

• prepare the graduate to provide professional nursing care in accordance with the tasks resulting from the roles and responsibilities of professional nurses: health promotion, prevention of illness and care of ill, disabled and dying people,
• develop skills to plan and implement nursing care,
• health promotion in relation to a healthy and ill person,
• develop the ability to cooperate with the therapeutic team,
• prepare for participation in the implementation of health policy,
• sensitize to providing nursing care in accordance with the principles of professional ethics,
• prepare for self-education and taking responsibility for the educational process,
• instruct the graduate to undertake education according to the professional system of development for nurses and acquire professional specialties,
• prepare the graduate to continue his/her studies at two-year master's studies.

Professional functions of a nurse:

• direct functions – patients-related work: care, education, health promotion, prevention, therapy, physiotherapy
• indirect functions – profession-related work: research, administration, self-education

Brief description of knowledge, skills and social competences obtained by a graduate of Nursing - first-cycle studies:

A graduate of the first-degree studies in the field of Nursing is prepared to independently perform professional nursing care determined by the functions of the profession. The alumnus is also prepared to provide and manage nursing care, health education, act as a participant in the health care team, practice development nursing and work as a researcher.

The graduate, after obtaining the licence to practice the profession issued by the self-government of nurses and midwives, is qualified to perform the following services: nursing care, prophylaxis, diagnostic, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and health promotion. The graduate is prepared to work in public and non-public health care facilities, including hospitals, health care centres, palliative and hospice care centres and social care homes.

The aims of practical classes are to:

• developa positive attitude towards and prepare students to provide independent professional nursing care,

• obtain knowledge about the specifics of work in various health care units and in primary health care,

• develop the ability to implement the theoretical knowledge in nursing practice,

• improve the practical skills and professional competences in everyday practice.

Description of practical classes

The practical classes are conducted by the practitioner (nurse) who is an employee of a certain hospital ward or medical centre. The selection of institutions for the implementation of apprenticeships is made once per academic year, based on strictly defined criteria.

During practical classes in the basics of nursing and specialist care, the student of first-cycle studies acquires the following skills:

• provide independent nursing care according to the principles of general and professional ethics,
• holistic and individualized bedside manner,
• respect for patients' rights,
• recognize health conditions and needs of a patient,
• conduct health education of the individual and social group,
• identify patient's care problems,
• plan and provide nursing care for the patient,
• provide independent care: prevention, diagnostic, physiotherapy and medical rescue activities,
• cooperate with members of the therapeutic team in the process of prevention, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation,
• assess the type and scope of medical care,
• organize care environment in the hospital and at patients’ home,
• organize and plan work at the workplace,
• prepare the patient to practice self-care and educate the caregiver patient’s needs.

Graduation requirements

The condition for graduation is to achieve the learning outcomes specified in the study program along with the assigned ECTS points (minimum 180 points for the first-cycle studies).

The conditions for admission to the diploma examination are:

• obtain the learning outcomes provided in the program of studies,
• positive result of the bachelor’s thesis verification in the anti-plagiarism system,
• obtain a positive grade for the bachelor’s thesis.

The diploma examination after the first-cycle studies consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. The condition for admission to the practical exam is obtaining a positive grade in the theoretical part of the exam.
